Young men encouraged to access online support
12/06/2012
To coincide with Men's Health Week (11 - 17 June 2012),
headspace has
released a new video encouraging young men who are going through a
tough time to seek help online or on the phone if they don't feel
ready or don't have access to face to face services.
The video features
workers from the eheadspace online and
telephone mental health support service, and aims to answer common
questions and address any fears young men may have about getting
help via eheadspace.
eheadspace is a confidential, free* and secure space
where young people aged 12 to 25 years and their family can web
chat, email or speak on the phone with a qualified youth mental
health professional.
headspace CEO Chris Tanti said the majority of young men
who experience mental health and alcohol or drug problems don't
seek help due to reasons such as believing it is a sign of weakness
or the conviction that they don't need anyone else's
help.
"Mental health is the
single biggest health issue facing young men today. Depression,
anxiety and drug and alcohol use are key areas of concern, with men
more than twice as likely as women to have drug and alcohol
problems. However, many young men still don't feel comfortable
getting help."
"We want young men to know
that eheadspace
is somewhere to turn if they're concerned about their mental health
but don't feel ready to talk to someone face to face or if they
don't have services in their area."
Men's Health Week takes
place 11 - 17 June 2012. Men's Health Week promotes awareness of
important male specific health issues, while acknowledging and
celebrating the contribution men make at work, home and in the
community.
