The Docs and Teens Program

The Geelong Division of General Practice has implemented a program in the Secondary school system that assists in increasing youth access to local health services (including GPs).

The workshops increase young people's knowledge of these services, broadening their definitions of health and ill-health. Barriers between GPs and young people are broken down through the sharing of knowledge and expertise of adolescent health in a way that positively influences their lives.

GPs are able to present a more accessible and approachable face to the students as a natural consequence of the relaxed and interactive nature of the activities. Schools are provided with brochures on visiting a GP, local youth services and Medicare application forms for distribution to students.

The workshops address issues around Medicare and confidentiality, general and sexual health, illicit drug use, harm minimisation, risk and protective factors, communication skills, adolescent health and accessing local health services.

At the end of these workshops students faced with health issues, are better able to recognise their need and access appropriate resources.

Youth Sexual Health Project

The Youth Sexual Health Project aimed to improve the overall sexual health and wellbeing of young people who are not in mainstream schooling.

The Youth Sexual Health Education Manual for young people in alternative school settings is a series of six sessions, the activities are interactive and could be implemented in a variety of settings with young people.

The Youth Sexual Health Peer Education Program can be used in conjunction with the Sexual Health Education Manual.  This program is also a series of six sessions.

This project was funded by the Department of Human Services Health Promotion Initiative 2006/7- HIV and STI Prevention.

Read The Play

Read the Play is an important initiative that addresses the most common health concern of the young people in our community: mental health issues. It involves the under 16 football and under 15 netball programs within Geelong and District, Football Geelong and Bellarine Netball league clubs.

Representatives from each of these clubs participate in a training program they bring back to their clubs.

The training program provides representatives with the knowledge and skills to guide young people to relevant support services.
