Community awareness and promotion

headspace Southern Downs has supported a number of activities in the local community:

Who Stole the Sole

WhoStoleTheSole

"Who Stole the Sole" is a theatrical performance that explores the teenage world of cyber-bullying. Presented by Phunctional, a theatre group based in Melbourne, this workshop explores the complex world of teenage communication on and offline - including topics such as cyber safety, bullying, relationships, homophobia, and sexism.

headspace Southern Downs is pleased to support this workshop, in assisting our community to better understand the world of cyber-bullying and how it is effecting the young people of today. We hope that the workshop will create much discussion in our community, between parents and their children, and many others as well.

"Who Stole the Sole" will be held on Monday the 23rd of May between 6:30pm - 8:30pm at the Scots PGC Assembly Hall, Oxenham Street, WARWICK. The cost is FREE OF CHARGE.

Please find attached the flyer for the workshop.

Peace Festival

Peace in the Park

The biannual Peace Festival was held again this year - this time, from late April to early May, with headspace Southern Downs attending Peace in the Park on Saturday 30th April. We participated in an agency showcase with many other local youth and support services from our area. It was a fantastic day, and we were very happy to throw our support behind such a great event.

The Peace Festival creates a program which is all about 'the ingredients of peace' - acceptance, generosity, inclusiveness, and community involvement. In quoting the Peace Festival website on how the Festival began, it draws it's inspiration from the late Vijayadev Yogendra, founder of the Total Health and Education Foundation:
"In his last years he wrote a short monograph on peace "Peace - A Way of Life" leading up to the Pathways to Peace Symposium and Cultural Program held at Griffith University in 2003. The success of the symposium led to the creation of the first festival held in Warwick in 2005. This was followed by a second very successful festival in 2007".

National Youth Week Awards 2011

Warwick Youth WeekStanthorpe Youth Week

As part of the celebrations for National Youth Week (NYW) for 2011, local Youth Development workers Rebecca Schroder and Bonita Tyler organised two awards nights (one in Stanthorpe and one in Warwick) to celebrate the contributions of young people to the communities across the Southern Downs area.

NYW is a joint Australian, state, territory and local government initiative. It is coordinated by the Australian Government Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations, in collaboration with the state and territory government departments responsible for youth affairs.

The theme for National Youth Week for 2011 was 'OWN IT' and was held from Friday the 1st - Sunday 10th of April. Under this theme, Bec, Bonita, and some of the young people in the area, had a great idea for young people to nominate and be nominated for awards which acknowledge their contributions to the development and life of small communities.

The Stanthorpe Awards night was held on the 1st of April and the Warwick Awards night was held on the 9th of April. Both evenings were considered a huge success, and here at headspace Southern Downs we would like to congratulate the young people nominated and the award winners.

headspace Southern Downs was very happy to support the National Youth Weeks Awards, in celebrating the great work and achievements of the young people in our area.
