Sarah, 15 SA

My depression, anxiety, eating disorder and substance use all started in 2008 when I had four close friends pass away suddenly in a period of 6 months. I was 13 at the time, so I grew up extremely fast and most of my friends are 2-4 years older than me. To become happier again, my main priority ... more

Tanniiee, 17 NSW

I battle depression every day, I try to stay clean, and I try not to cut... just getting that out of the way. My depression started after I lost my boyfriend when I was 13 to a stabbing. Mental health info

Depression

Depression is common. Among young Australians aged 12-25 years, depression is the most common mental health problem. Around 1 in 4 young people will have had a depressive disorder by the end of their adolescence.

Anxiety

Anxiety is another word to describe worry. It is an unpleasant emotion that we all feel when we are faced with challenges. Anxiety can be useful at times, as it helps us prepare and perform tasks.

Alcohol and Binge drinking

Alcohol is the most widely used recreational drug in Australia. This means that for a lot of people, drinking alcohol in moderation is accepted and considered sociable. But for others, drinking can get out of control, causing harm to themselves and others.

More on mental health

Mental health problems are common. Feeling down is a mental health problem. As is feeling tense, angry or anxious. We all suffer from mental health problems over the course of our life.

Getting help

Getting help

There are a number of ways you can get help; this may include talking to a friend or family member, or you can visit a headspace service where you will find psychologists, social workers, and other health professionals.  If you don't live near a headspace talking to your General Practitioner, or a counsellor is a good option.

headspace is funded by the Australian Government under the Promoting Better Mental Health - Youth Mental Health Initiative.
