13 reasons why

resources for young people and parents

13 Reasons Why is a fictional drama series that tackles tough real-life issues experienced by teens and young people. Following the global impact of 13 Reasons Whyheadspace has created safe and informative resources for young people and parents.

These resources are designed to ensure young people and parents have the information they need, in order to have safe conversations, to be aware of potentially distressing content, to make decisions about whether or not to watch the series, and to know how to seek support if necessary. Not everyone who watches the show will find the content distressing as it will depend on their individual life experiences and current circumstances, but for those who are concerned information is available.

Good mental health allows you to cope with the changes and challenges that can come with life and enables you to live life in a positive and meaningful way. There are simple strategies and tools to help you along the way, as it can take regular effort. It’s also important to know when, and how, to seek professional help if needed.

Gillian, Liam and Dani are all passionate youth mental health advocates and part of the headspace Youth National Reference Group. In this video, they each share personal experiences about their mental health and wellbeing journey, and how they sought help.

We think it is important that young people and parents have the resources to support the tough topics depicted in 13 Reasons Why, Season 4.

headspace have created two resources which you can find below:

  • For young people

  • For parents

The discussion guide for young people will outline key themes of concern, and provide important information to help young people to decide whether to watch the show, how to talk safely about the themes depicted, how to support a friend, and how to seek support.

Resources for parents will provide information on how to have safe conversations about the show and how to respond to each of the difficult and tough themes appropriately. Resources also point parents to a range of professional support services and additional sources of information for each of the themes covered in the series.

Season 3

Season 2

The cast of 13 Reasons Why talk about the difficult issues raised in Season 2, as well as how to look after yourself. Knowing how and where to get help if you, or someone you know is affected by what is shown is important.

If you find the themes in the show distressing and need any support, chat to a friend, your family, a trusted adult or a professional.
